A search can influence a buyer without creating a visit you can measure. That makes reporting harder. It does not make every untracked sale an SEO win.
Zero-click search metrics should combine observed visibility, branded demand, qualified enquiries and customer-reported discovery. Keep the evidence for each measure separate. Crawler activity, answer citations and human visits describe different events and cannot be used interchangeably.
The useful bits, at a glance
- Keep machine requests, answer citations and human visits separate.
- Add qualified enquiries and customer-reported discovery to the report.
- Choose an action from the evidence rather than inventing an AI click-through rate.

What does zero-click actually mean?
A zero-click search ends without a visit to another website in the measurement being discussed. That can happen for many reasons: the answer is already on the results page, the user changes the query, opens an app or stops searching. It does not necessarily mean an AI answer satisfied the user, and it does not tell you that a named business gained a customer.
For a B2B firm, the useful question is what happens to the buying journey. A prospect might learn about a service in search, ask an AI tool to compare approaches, then arrive through a referral or a branded search. Your analytics may record only the last visible part.
Use four layers of evidence
| Layer | What to record | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Search exposure | Relevant impressions and query groups | An impression is not proof of attention. |
| Observed AI answers | Mentions, cited URLs and test conditions | A sample is not total audience reach. |
| Commercial response | Qualified enquiries and opportunities | The original influence may be missing. |
| Customer account | What buyers say helped them decide | Memory and self-reporting are imperfect. |
Keep conventional traffic and conversion reporting. It remains useful evidence of observable behaviour. Add the other layers to explain its limits rather than replacing one incomplete metric with another.

Why bot visits are not AI impressions
A crawler fetching a page is a machine request. It is not a count of people seeing your brand in an answer. One fetch can support multiple uses, and a fetched page may never appear in a user-facing answer at all.
For that reason, dividing human referral visits by GPTBot requests does not produce an “AI click-through rate”. The numerator and denominator describe different populations. Use bot logs to investigate access and crawling, and human analytics to measure observed visits.
Similarly, a citation count is not a count of unique buyers. Explain the definition supplied by each platform before combining its figures with another source.
Use first-party reports within their limits
Bing’s AI Performance report provides citation information for supported Microsoft and partner experiences. It does not establish your total visibility across every AI service. Keep the platform scope beside the metric.
Check referral sources and campaign parameters in analytics, and preserve them where your consent and tracking setup allows. A missing referral is not proof that AI had no influence. Equally, a ChatGPT referral is not proof that ChatGPT created the entire demand for the service.
Ask a better question at intake
“How did you first hear about us?” is useful. Follow it, where appropriate, with “What helped you decide to contact us?” The answers may identify a professional referral, a guide, a previous relationship or an AI comparison.
Record the buyer’s own words and the observed source as separate fields. Avoid rewriting a nuanced journey into a single channel that happens to make the marketing report look stronger.
What should change next month?
An illustrative monthly review
Suppose a service business records fewer organic visits, more relevant search impressions and three customers who mention an AI tool during intake. Report all three observations. Do not infer that AI caused the traffic decline or claim all three customers would otherwise have been lost.
Review which pages and queries changed, whether the customers were already familiar with the firm and what other channels were involved. Use that evidence to choose the next page improvement or measurement test. Keep the same definitions for the next review so the comparison remains meaningful.

Enquiries and customers
A practical framework from Pieo
Choose one action from the combined evidence. If relevant visibility grows but enquiries remain unsuitable, revisit the audience and offer. If qualified enquiries rise but sales stall, review fit and the sales process. If data is missing because a form is broken, fix the form before buying another visibility tool.
A useful report makes uncertainty explicit and still helps the team act. That is a higher standard than finding a metric that always goes up.
