Law firm SEO is the work of getting your firm in front of people searching for legal help, in Google's results, its map pack, its AI Overviews and in AI assistants like ChatGPT, and turning those searches into signed cases. The parts that matter most are practice area pages that answer real client questions, a strong Google Business Profile for each office, visible attorney credentials, and consistent information about your firm across directories and bar listings. Rankings are a means. Signed cases are the measure.
The search volume tells you how competitive this is. SEMrush puts "law firm seo" at 9,900 US searches a month (September 2026), with an average cost per click of about $66. Many of those searchers are firms looking for help, and many of the agencies answering them report rankings. I would push you to ask for something else.
Why is law firm SEO so competitive?
Because one client can be worth a lot. When a click on "law firm seo" alone is priced at around $66, you can imagine what personal injury or criminal defense terms cost in paid search. That makes organic visibility valuable, and it attracts a lot of agencies.
It is also a sector where Google applies a high standard. Its quality rater guidelines overview describes "Your Money or Your Life" topics, those that could significantly affect people's health, financial stability or safety, as needing the most trust. Legal problems fall squarely in that group.
What are the foundations of SEO for lawyers?
Practice area pages that answer questions
One page per practice area, and often one per sub-type. "Car accident lawyer", "truck accident lawyer" and "uninsured motorist claims" are different searches from people in different situations. Each page should open with a direct answer, then explain the process, the typical timescale, who handles it and what the client should do next.
Local search
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence includes links and reviews. "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking." For a firm with several offices, that means a Business Profile and a location page for each, with the right categories and reviews that mention the type of case.
Attorney credibility
Google's helpful content guidance asks whether it is "self-evident to your visitors who authored your content" and puts trust above every other quality signal. Attorney bio pages with bar admissions, years in practice, practice focus and published work are not decoration. Link to them from every page they wrote or reviewed.
Technical basics
Pages indexed, fast on mobile, main text in the HTML rather than loaded by scripts, and no accidental blocks on crawlers.
How is AI search changing law firm SEO?
Two changes matter.
Fewer clicks from informational searches. Pew Research studied 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025. With an AI summary present, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without. That hits "what is the statute of limitations for..." pages hardest. Those pages still matter, because being cited in the summary puts your name in front of the searcher, but they will not deliver the traffic they once did.
Shortlists formed inside AI assistants. People now ask ChatGPT "who are the best employment lawyers in Austin?" or "what should I ask a divorce attorney before hiring?". OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". Its publisher FAQ describes appearing in terms of crawler access and content, with no paid placement.
Google's own position on its AI features is that no special optimisation is needed beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. In practice, the pages that get cited are the ones that answer the question fastest and most credibly. Research presented at KDD 2024, the GEO paper, found that adding cited sources, quotations and statistics were the most effective ways to raise a page's visibility in AI-generated answers.
What should law firm SEO avoid?
- Misleading claims. ABA Model Rule 7.1 states: "A lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services." Your state's rules may differ, so check with your state bar before publishing results, testimonials or superlatives.
- Doorway pages. Fifty near-identical city pages with the town name swapped in are a risk and rarely help.
- Bought links and reviews. Short-term, risky and hard to undo.
- Rankings as the report. Ranking first for a term that brings no cases is a vanity result.
Which numbers should you report?
| Report this | Not just this |
|---|---|
| Signed cases by source, counted by your intake or finance team | Organic sessions |
| Qualified consultations booked | Total form fills |
| Case value by practice area | Rankings for a keyword list |
| Share of AI answers naming your firm for key questions | "Impressions" |
| Calls from Business Profiles, by office | Domain authority |
We run our own client reporting this way. On one B2B services engagement (not legal), the client's finance team counted 18 new accounts in eight months from enquiries we generated, at about £40,000 invoiced. The number that mattered came from their books.
From our work
A US estate planning firm we reviewed in September 2026 had seen its estimated search visits halve in three months, from about 1,700 in May to about 800 in August. For the two searches that bring clients it was 13th and 18th, off page one. Much of the traffic it did get came from a guide to writing your own living trust, which attracts people trying not to hire a lawyer. Traffic like that looks healthy on a report and brings in very few instructions.
What we'd do in your first 30 days
- Pick the practice areas that matter. Rank them by case value and capacity, not search volume.
- Map the questions. For each, list 10 questions clients ask before hiring. Search them in Google and ChatGPT and note who is named.
- Fix access and tracking. Crawlers (Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot), indexing, call tracking by office, and a "how did you hear about us?" question at intake.
- Rebuild three practice area pages answer-first, with attorney bylines, process, timescales and sources.
- Clean up listings. Business Profiles, legal directories and bar listings should describe each attorney and practice area consistently.
- Agree the scorecard with your intake team: consultations and signed cases by source, monthly.
We work with law firms in the US and UK. Our AI search page explains how the AI side fits in.

FAQ
How long does law firm SEO take?
Technical and local fixes can show within weeks. Competitive practice areas in large metros can take many months to move meaningfully. Judge early progress on consultations, not rankings.
Is law firm SEO worth it compared with paid search?
For most firms, both have a place. Paid search is immediate but you pay for every click. Organic and AI visibility take longer but keep working. The right mix depends on case value and how quickly you need volume.
Do lawyers need to worry about ChatGPT?
Yes, because prospective clients use it to build shortlists and check firms they have been referred to. Make sure it can read your site and that trusted sites describe you accurately.
Should we publish legal guides and blog posts?
Yes, if they answer questions prospective clients ask and link to the relevant practice area page. Expect fewer clicks than before on general questions, and measure them on assisted cases.
